For many people, the hardest part of getting mental health support is saying the words out loud for the first time. Here is how to make it easier.
Before the appointment
Write down what you have been experiencing. Note your symptoms, how long they have been going on, how they are affecting daily life, and any patterns you have noticed. It is easy to forget key details once you are in the room.
What to say
You do not need to have it all figured out. Something direct and simple works: 'I have been struggling with my mood lately and I would like to talk about it.' That is enough. Your provider will ask follow-up questions.
Be honest, even if it is uncomfortable
Providers are trained to hear about difficult experiences without judgment. Being honest — even about things that feel embarrassing — leads to better care. You do not need to minimize what you are going through.
Ask questions before you leave
What do you think might be going on? What are my treatment options? What would you recommend as a first step? What should I do if things get worse before my next appointment?
If the provider is not the right fit
If you feel dismissed or brushed off, seek care from another provider. You do not need a referral to see a mental health specialist in most cases.
Take our assessment to find the right type of provider for what you are experiencing.
