Therapist or Psychiatrist: Which One Do You Need?

One of the most common questions people have when seeking mental health care is: do I need a therapist or a psychiatrist? It depends on what you are dealing with — and sometimes you may benefit from both.

What a therapist does

Therapists (LCSWs, LPCs, LMFTs) provide talk therapy. They help you explore thoughts, emotions, and behavior patterns, and teach coping skills. Therapy is highly effective for anxiety, depression, relationship issues, trauma, and life transitions. Therapists cannot prescribe medication.

What a psychiatrist does

Psychiatrists are medical doctors specializing in mental health. They diagnose conditions, prescribe and manage medication, and provide clinical assessments. Some offer therapy too, but many focus on medication management.

What about PMHNPs?

Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners are advanced practice nurses trained in psychiatry. Like psychiatrists, they can diagnose and prescribe, often with a more holistic approach.

Signs you might start with therapy

You want to process emotions or relationship patterns, your symptoms are mild to moderate, or you prefer to try non-medication approaches first.

Signs you might start with psychiatry

Symptoms are severe or significantly impairing daily life, therapy alone has not been enough, you want to explore medication, or you need a formal diagnosis.
