What Is Insomnia?

Insomnia is characterized by persistent difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early — despite adequate opportunity for sleep — leading to daytime impairment. It's the most common sleep disorder, affecting about 30% of adults at some point and 10% chronically.

Insomnia is rarely just a sleep problem. It frequently co-occurs with anxiety, depression, chronic pain, PTSD, and ADHD — and often requires treating the underlying condition alongside the sleep disturbance itself.

Types of Sleep Disorders We Treat

Chronic Insomnia

Difficulty sleeping at least 3 nights per week for 3+ months. Can be sleep-onset (can't fall asleep) or sleep-maintenance (waking during the night).

Acute Insomnia

Short-term sleep disruption triggered by stress, life events, or environmental changes. May resolve on its own or require brief intervention.

Comorbid Insomnia

Sleep disturbance driven by another condition — anxiety, depression, PTSD, chronic pain, or medication side effects. Treating the underlying cause is essential.

Hypersomnolence

Excessive daytime sleepiness despite adequate nighttime sleep — which may indicate depression, sleep apnea, or other disorders requiring evaluation.

Waking frequently at night
Waking too early
